The Heart Behind the Lens

Hi, I’m Esmeralda Ruiz—a photographer, illustrator, and designer with a heart for creativity, family, and storytelling. I was born and raised in Los Angeles, California, in a close-knit family of artists where painting, photography, design, and sculpture were a part of everyday life. That creative upbringing shaped not just my career, but also the way I see the world—with gratitude, curiosity, and connection.

I earned both a BFA and MFA in Fine Art Photography, along with an MFA in Graphic Design from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. While in school, I had the privilege of working as a tutor, supporting both photography and graphic design students—a role that deepened my passion for mentorship and community.

Over the past ten years, I’ve worked professionally in both fine art and commercial photography. My fine art work—especially my dreamy, atmospheric landscapes—has been exhibited in galleries across the country and featured in publications both nationally and internationally.

On the commercial side, I’ve had the joy of photographing for marketing agencies and small businesses. My work has included still life product photography for websites, behind-the-scenes moments of chefs and mixologists, and environmental portraits of people dining in vibrant restaurant spaces. I’ve also worked as a photographer and graphic designer for the Muslim Public Affairs Council, creating visuals that help share powerful stories and advocacy.

Today, I’m back to my roots—working with my family at Emerald Art Gallery, our small, family-owned business where I help manage the day-to-day, connect with clients, and contribute my own creative work. I recently relocated to Granger, Indiana, where the community has welcomed me with open arms. I’m now raising my daughter here and continuing to grow creatively in this peaceful, inspiring space.

I also volunteer as a photographer at Granger Community Church, where I get to document the beautiful, faith-filled moments that happen throughout the week. Giving back to the community while balancing motherhood and creativity brings me so much joy.

If you’re looking for a photography session, a custom illustration, or even help decorating a meaningful space—I’d love to connect. The Granger Studio is now open year-round, and I can’t wait to welcome you in.
